so they called us -- national park. so they called us because of the remote area. >> reporter: but finding the man wasn't easy. >> they re giving gps coordinates of his location. we didn't have to spend any time looking for him. >> reporter: he was three- quarters of the way up old rag mountain in shenandoah national park. >> we did an orbit and we could see the hike we are his leg on some rocks. >> that area of the ridgeline is not really a hiking trail. it's more climbing on boulders. >> reporter: david hurley went down to effect the rescue. >> it was a very small clearing with trees and rocks around. i mean, it looked like there might be an element of danger but it looked doable. >> reporter: the injured hiker was a 34-year-old pennsylvania man. >> he was alert and conscious. he just had a severe looked like an ankle fracture. so i wanted to splint that up which i did and he also had a minor wrist injury. gave him some water and then just briefed him basically on how he was going to be hoisted up so he would be safe.
